This is the one is in the front yard. It’s a beautiful tree in front of an unsightly background of 1. parking lot w/cars and 2. red brick building, approximately of the same shade of red as the leaves on the tree.
Love the tree though. When we move away however, spouse is likely to leave it behind as he did last time we moved. We’ve “visited” the other Japanese Maple that he planted at our old place and it’s doing well–the gardeners haven’t killed it yet.

Wow.
Last night, just putting together onto a work days off grid for this summer for spouse, factoring in son’s Driver’s Education at the high school for the first half of summer ($350, which is actually less than what I thought the good teachers of this District would work for) and younger son’s monthly blood test for the medication he is taking for his skin, was so exhilarating for spouse that he only got 4 hours sleep. Then he went to work and described his plans and the people he talked to told him it didn’t sound like a vacation.
Interesting how we have different notions of, What is a vacation? For me it means that I can swim any time I like in a lake or ocean, I have a working hot/cold shower (and have at least one other water source/decent sleeping accommodations–cabin’s OK). Good weather is nice but there’s always off days. I guess one of the best things about summer vacation is no work. Being at our cottage or more correctly, our cottage someday, is always being on vacation, even when you are working (mostly–housework stills blows chunks). ![]()
Spouse has all these ideas for what he wants to do with the terrain around the cottage. Plus there is maintenance stuff on the ground proper–the “road” that we take to our cottage is the worst I’ve ever seen with it getting torn up badly by my idiot cousin (doesn't every family have at least one?) over the summer and still lookin’ that way when we left in September. Roger is all “no problem” about repairing it. He’s most excited about having-the time to get some major work done on some hilly area that has stepping stones stones embedded–mostly likely by my grandfather as the stones (we verified) are near the property line to our/our neighbours to the left of us. He wants to build a mini patio area that gets shade midway down the short hill to the beach.
I am totally in love with Maple Lake.
Spouse is a gardener with a strong landscaping bent. So he’ll as of us figuring it out together last night, have close to four weeks at the lake divided, 2 weeks-1 week and 2 long weekends at the beginning and the end. I hope to stay even longer.
I’m pretty excited too, but cautiously so as I must call the Internet guy who may service our area--not sure yet--for about $100 versus satellite cable teevee Internet guy who can do it for $675 Cdn. Now. Yikes. Hundred dollars Internet guy was backed up by 800 emails inquiring about serivce in front of mine-- and not counting telephone orders. They sound really short-handed. I’m pretty much sure that I’ll have to bite the bullet and spend the $675 Cdn, which as much as I love the Motherland, I hope is no more than equal to the US buck.
Youngest son has been home with a miserable cold. As of last night he was much improved and we were scrambling to find a costume he needed for American History in order to do a political skit.
I got up today looking forward to a nice quiet house, walked out into the living room and there he was at the computer!
Before I could register my surprise he said brightly, "Snow day." No way. Way! Unbelievable (but true).
We are fairly hardy here in the great Midwest US; there's a bit of pride involved in soldiering on through wickedly bad weather--and--we had a snow day last Friday!
This is very, very odd though I can see mother nature deciding that the drought we'd had last winter just wouldn't do and therefore we are getting far more snow than normal now.
Oh well. Two upsides. I enjoy younger son's company and he gets an additional day to rest up from being sick.
This is a sort of kindergarten explanation of technology/the Internet. I learned for example, that pixel is short for picture element, "pix" for "pictures". Woo, huh?
From what I saw of it, an Earth's weather replica--a newer exhibit, I hadn't realized it was a program where 'ya sit for a while--and we had to chose-- to go to the one we'd already tickets for--a dinosaur film. Have you ever heard of the "the monstrous Tylosaurus?". Next time, Earth! lol.
Close enough.
Sea Monsters chase "Dollies" (Dolichorhynchops)
IMAX is fun. If I were motivated to drive to the city and pay $20 to park at Navy Pier I'd go see U2 in IMAX splendor. Maybe...I have to think on it. Trying to save and that doesn't cut it. It's "Can't go, am saving." Present tense. Meh.
Sea Monsters~ The film follows a family of Dolichorhynchops, also known informally as “Dollies,” as they traverse ancient waters populated with saber- toothed fish, prehistoric sharks and giant squid. On their journey the Dollies encounter other extraordinary sea creatures: lizard-like reptiles called Platecarpus that swallowed their prey whole like snakes; Styxosaurus with necks nearly 20 feet long and paddle- like fins as large as an adult human; and at the top of the food chain, the monstrous Tylosaurus, a predator with no enemies. Merging ultra-high-resolution 3-D graphics with compelling imagery and powerful storytelling, the film is an unforgettable prehistoric adventure.
Hey Peeps,
In the spirit of TMI, here I am in the sleep lab about 20 hours ago,12 electrodes on my head and many more on other parts including my legs. Yes, I had to ask dude that was watching me on the monitor to unplug me so I could wee.
I'm about to hop in the shower now to try and get the remnants of last night's adventure out of my hair. You can see a white dot peeking out of my hair--that's a glue-like substance keepin' the wire stuck to my head 'cos how else are they gonna keep it there?
Anyway, it went well 'cept I only slept for 90 minutes total. But that was enough for the sleep monitor dude to say that I'm completely fine which is what I already knew. Silly Drs. and their silly, expensive tests. At least I got this done after I met my insurance deductible for the year.
I was sprung from the sleep clinic in time to miss morning traffic. Came home to all my sleepyheads just up--a sight I rarely see--and I'm kinda glad I don't. lol.
So off I go. This gluey sitch must be remedied. Now.
Hope you all are well. I shall catch up sooner than later.
xxC.
