QotD: No Laughing Matter

And I thought Steve Irwin's last words were, "Now I'm going to shove my thumb up his rear... Krikey! He doesn't seem too happy with that..."
it's true! you NEED humor to get past the truly horrible things in life...
I totally agree with you. Humour is a coping mechanism.
Yes, absoutely. The more genuine laughter, the better--even when it hurts!

Humour is a coping mechanism.

Very true, Emjay. And a healthy one at that. :)

Funnily enough I had this same conversation just yesterday with a friend of mine who has also lost a parent young. We were laughing at the totally inappropriate things we said or did when they were in intensive care. How if you told anyone else what you'd done they'd be horrified at the callousness of it, but sometimes you gotta laugh.....or you'd cry!

Now I am a massive Steve Irwin fan and this had me smiling lots. I cannot get over how clever (twisted??!!) some people are in coming up with jokes so quickly after a celebrity has died, certainly this is the case in the UK, and within hours the jokes are being e-mailed all over. Very funny they are too!

I love dark humour, some British comedies are just superb. The only humour I do not like is when it is deliberately being cruel and nasty. I was reading Perez Hilton online (hmmm, shouldn't admit that!) and there was a really scathing comment about someone who had recently had a miscarriage. He wrote something he obviously thought was funny and it was just cruel. Way below the belt.

But yes.....laughter really is the best medicine.

Sxxxxxxx

Spot on. Without humor, it would be tough to get through life's challenges.
Coping... hmmm... One day at work, everyone was trying to outdo everyone else with stories of how tough they were. Stories of fights and what-not flew back and forth. I pointed to the knot on my head that was the result of a baseball bat to the head, courtesy of my brother and said in an oh-so-serious manner, "The guy who did this, is dead". Everyone just looked at each other for a second, but one guy knew that my brother had died a couple weeks prior to that just shook his head and told me I just wasn't right...
[this is good]
i'm with you. i've got a morbid/dark sense of humor. if you can't laugh about things, life would be boring.
[this is good]
LOL I'm sure Irwin himself would love this!! Wildlife folks tend to have dark humor anyway, you have to if you want to keep going! ;)

Oh Sasha, I shan't ever tell that you were sneaking a peek at Perez. :D
Often I think they are going for "shock value" rather than being funny. Big difference in my book.

Oh yes. Big Steve Irwin fans in the States too. I'll bet the man was loved just about world-wide.

Glad you feel the same. :)

but one guy knew that my brother had died a couple weeks prior to that just shook his head and told me I just wasn't right...

But here you are right or "wrong" still bringing mirth into people's lives. I disagree with that guy. No sense of humour.

I can get quite dark too, especially with people I trust. I don't even want to say how many times I've joked about relative's impending deaths--the timetables that I feel they'll be on, etc. If it's wrong I guess I'll end up eternally damned.

I see your point (about wildlife folks) and raise you one! :)

Maya! Welcome, friend! Good to see you!
